A history of the mainly Jewish children's home in Izieu, established by the OSE in May 1943 on the initiative of Sabine Zlatin, who also became its director. The children were mostly orphans of Eastern European origin, whose parents had been deported from France to death camps. In August 1943 the children numbered 70. Some stayed only for a short period and were then sent to foster families or religious institutions, or helped to cross the border into Spain or Switzerland by illegal rescue networks. Describes everyday life in the children's home and presents profiles of many of its young inhabitants. Focuses in particular on the fate of the children of the originally Polish Halaunbrenner family and the Viennese Halpern family. In April 1944 the home was raided by the local Gestapo on the order of Kalus Barbie, and all of the 44 children and seven adults present at the time were arrested. 42 chidren and six adults were deported to Auschwitz; two children and one adult were sent to Reval in Estonia and killed. In Auschwitz, only one adult from Izieu survived.
