Ce troisième volume des entretiens de Michel Butor couvre les années 1979 à 1996. Butor acquiert un statut complexe. A la fois écrivain du retrait, il est consacré aussi comme l'initiateur de ce que fut appelé le nouveau roman. Il n'a plus cependant l'apparence d'un auteur difficile et crypté.
